In the practice of acupuncture, individually wrapped sterile needles are used only once to ensure safety. They are nothing like the needles used by western medicine to administer injections. The needles are extremely fine in diameter, about the width of a human hair. The needles are gently placed at specific points along the energy channels or meridians. As the needles are placed, the patient may feel a mild initial sensation followed by tingling, mild ache or traveling warmth. The patient may not feel the needle at all or may experience a sudden pulse of energy similar to a mild tweak of "the funny bone". For those who feel comfortable with additional stimulation, the needles may be manipulated or warmed to enhance the efficiency of the treatment. Relief is often felt immediately or shortly after treatment. Most patients look forward to treatments for the many benefits that are received from acupuncture including pain control, increased vitality, stress reduction, deep relaxation, skin and facial rejuvenation, weight control, relief from addictions, depression, anxiety, allergy symptoms, sinusitis, headaches, migraine, backache, toothache, insomnia, PMS, menopause, digestive disorders, strains, sprains, sports injury, inflammation, asthma, and many more. Once the needles are in place, most treatments usually last between 20 and 40 minutes. For small children and those with a pronounced fear of needles, acupressure and micro-current stimulation can be successfully substituted on the same acupuncture points.
